Festivities of Santa Maria

Festivities of Santa Maria

Commemoration of the Catalan conquest of Eivissa and Formentera.

Formentera celebrates around the 5th of August the festivities for Santa Maria, known also as the "Festes de la Terra". This celebration, that commemorates the Catalan conquest of Eivissa and Formentera in 1235, has a particularly popular character, with festive proposals that pay special attention to their own culture and traditions. Music in Catalan, dancing and sandal workshops, traditional games, poetry and conferences are some of the suggestions.

The programme of the fiestas, organised for 16 years by the Comissió de Festes de Santa Maria, includes this year a concert by the Minorcans Cris Juanico and Els Mags de Binigall on Friday night, August 5, and a concert by the Catalans Dept on Saturday night, August 6, as well as many other activities that can be consulted on the web site of the organisers: http://www.formenteraweb.net/santamaria
