The Balearic singers of "gloses" (ballads) represent a Mediaeval inheritance that has survived over the years. The "gloses" are the most important live expression of the traditional oral poetry, based on improvisation. Many singers do not know how to read and write but can dominate popular language better than anyone and have extraordinary mental abilities, being able to answer with rhythm, rhyme and irony any invitation.
